Yesterday I completely threw away my diet plan to partake in the joy of terribly wonderful food at the Indiana State Fair, and along the way I took a few Oppo-relevant pics as well.

The parade is always fun, although this particular iteration was rendered less entertaining by the missing CJ-2A. There’s a gorgeous one that sometimes heads the lineup, and since this is a Jeep blog (right?) I’ll include a photo of it from a few years ago.

This International Harvester relic powers...maybe kettle corn? I forgot to check what was at the end of the belt.

The theme of this year’s fair is everyday heroes, so fire engines were well-represented.

For anyone who cares to pass judgment on the appropriateness of the food pics below relative to my diet, the only thing I bought that I consumed entirely was the peach cider slush, which is my first stop every year and no diet could ever keep me away from. Such wonderful sweetness. Everything else I abandoned partway through so I could continue my quest for sugar.

For the morbidly curious, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Now that I’ve stumbled upon that page I have to go back to find the deep-fried chocolate cookie ice cream sandwich, and this time I’ll try the trifecta hero dreamsicle that I skipped yesterday.

Peach cider slush (mmmmmmm) and a Indiana Pork BBQ Split (Mac & cheese, BBQ, and Cole slaw).

The strawberry shortcake at the Indiana State Fair is a long-standing tradition that may be older than I am.

If you haven’t tried a deep-fried Milky Way bar, you haven’t lived.

A chocolate-dipped banana, just in case you needed clarification.

I ate way, way less of this kettle corn than I wanted to.

There was also a steak sandwich, but that photo is particularly uninteresting. Good sandwich though.

Nice pics. As you know, I went last Saturday for the first time in 31 years. The last time I set foot on those grounds was to take my now wife to a Styx concert in the grand stand.

I didn’t get the cider slush, but I did insist the kids take time out from the midway to go to the old Hooks pharmacy, where I got my root beer float at the soda counter.

That looks like a good time. It seems like all of our county fairs were last weekend, we need to go next year. I miss the parades, midway, food, etc.

I was there the day the grandstand collapsed just before a concert , and I considered attending , not because I liked the band, but because they happened to share a name with one of my favorite songs.

Life is one continuous series of happenstance.

Each summer f or a few years I created a color-coded county map indicating which week each county’s fair occurred, so I could try to catch a few in the same area; my goal was to hit every county fair eventually.

Unfortunately, I never really kept track of which ones I’d hit, and in general they seem to be in a state of decline, so I’ve set aside that goal. Maybe I’ll get back to it, but the longer I wait the less likely I’ll enjoy the effort.

That is, I believe, effectively what that deep-fried Milky Way bar is in my photos. What everyone else calls Mars Bar.

Outside the grandstand people constructed an unofficial memorial ; for the rest of the fair that year there was an assemblage of photos, flowers, etc .

What I found very frustrating was that the memorial was right next to the Hoosier Lottery booth, so for the next week or so there were people loudly  playing games next to what should have been a solemn spot. I can’t believe no one moved or shut down the booth.

Ahh. I looked on the “ 9 things to do” section of 9news last weekend and it was county fairs everywhere. I figured they were wrapping up last weekend, not starting. Good to know!

At least the Fair didn't clear it away or something during cleaning. I guess that's something.
